Metadata and Ontologies

Sensor Metadata

1 Introduction

OpenGeospatial Consortium (OGC) has development two important metadata. One is SensorML for sensors and the other is Observations and Measurements for sensor observations and measurements. We will introduce them briefly here. Also, we will briefly introduce the Harmonization and Crosswalking metadata.

Metadata Infrastructures and Operations

1 Introduction

Metadata are only some lego blocks which can be used to build datasets to meet the functional requirements of different applications. How to use these blocks when we face an overwhelming blocks? Such issues include how to get the correct block, how to update it when a block changed and how to integrate blocks from different metadata standards. Fortunately, some pioneers have done some for the goal. Here, we describe what they have done on the metadata infrastructures and operations.

Metadata References

Introduction

This note lists all the references about metadata in this forum.

Intellectual Property

1 Introduction

Intellectual property rights management is a broad term that describe an organisation’s processed for managing rights creation, licensing and usage, whether the content is digital or not.

Intellectual property is another part of data management which provides the legal protection upon data holder to their creations. In this note, we only describe conceptions and projects related with digital content.

Marine Metadata

1 Introduction

In the field of ocean datasets, there are two good works we should mention. One is marine community profile which is a marine metadata specification. The other is Marine Metadata Interoperability which is a project and has defined many marine metadata. We will describe these two works more detailed next.

Ecological Metadata

1 Introduction

Ecological Metadata Language (EML) is a metadata specification developed by the ecology discipline and for the ecology discipline. It is based on prior work done by the ESA (Ecological Society of America) and associated efforts. At present, ESA will require data associated with submitted papers to be put into EML. Currently EML version 2.0.1 is implemented by US LTER sites.

Spatial Metadata

1 Introduction

Metadata is often understood as “data about data”. It does not matter whether the data is digital or not. Such metadata includes information such as who owns it, where it came from, how was it measured, when was it produced, how good is it, and many other types of information. This note mainly introduces the importance of metadata and the metadata standards, Dublin Core and Spatial Metadata.
